Daily life

Good food, familiar routines and things to enjoy

Daily life is shaped around personal choice, friendships, interests and the small things that help a place feel like home.

Food and refreshments

Food at Lakenham is traditional, freshly prepared and home-cooked. Three meals are provided each day, with menus designed to be varied, wholesome and nutritious. Individual dietary needs and preferences are taken into account, and staff will try to provide favourite foods that are not already on the menu.

Breakfast may include cereals, toast, porridge, cooked items, tea, coffee and fruit juice. Lunch choices include roasts, pies, casseroles, fish and chips and a variety of traditional puddings. High tea may include soup, savoury dishes, sandwiches, salads, fruit and yoghurt.

Morning and afternoon refreshments are served, while water, squash and fruit juice are available throughout the day. A night-time platter is also prepared, and food and drink may be requested outside normal meal times.

Family, friends and visitors

Residents are encouraged to maintain social and professional contacts. Visitors may spend time privately in a resident's room, in a spare lounge or in other communal spaces. There are no fixed visiting hours, although the home asks to be told in advance about unusually early or late visits. All visitors sign in and out for security and fire safety.

Residents may make and receive calls privately, have unopened post delivered to them and receive help reading or writing letters when needed.

Activities and interests

Activities can support well-being, happiness, friendship and a sense of community. Participation is always a matter of personal choice. Morning and afternoon activities may include bingo, board games, jigsaws, gentle exercise, painting, drawing, singalongs, pet therapy, puppet shows, gardening, reminiscence, arts and crafts, parties, knitting, sewing and live music.

Staff also help with reading, walks, trips to the shops and manicures. Activity coordinators build a profile of each resident's interests and hobbies and make every effort to arrange activities that reflect individual preferences.

Visiting professionals

A hairdresser visits weekly and chiropodists visit regularly. Other professionals, such as dentists, massage therapists or chiropractors, may be arranged when requested.

Faith and worship

Lakenham recognises the spiritual dimension of care and has a strong Christian tradition. Residents of all faiths and none are welcomed and supported in following their own preferences. Visiting clergy and other religious leaders are welcome, and services are held at the home from time to time.

Smoking and alcohol

Smoking is not permitted inside the home. Residents who choose to smoke may do so in designated outdoor areas. Alcohol may be enjoyed where it is not detrimental to the resident or others and can be included in a care plan when assistance is needed.
